Imagine if you worked two demanding jobs to support a family of five and then your kids always want something brand new with the money you work hard for and save up as a safety net if something falls through. Julius is a hardworking father also just trying to make ends meet. And being a "ghetto snob" sometimes is a way of separating from a hard situation and aspiring for better. For Rochelle, that comes from a place of love. I'm sure a lot of lower income people and American minorities can relate to that. If you grow up as a middle class white kid, sure, you can look however and you'll still have opportunities, but you're not held to the same standard when you come from less. And that's hard to see as a kid, but that's parents wanting the best for you. My mom never wanted us looking "raggedy" cause you need to have high standards in a world that doesn't want you to succeed. I personally see my own family in it and I'm aure I'm not the only one. Part of what I love about the show is that it's a struggling family making it work with what they have. If Chris Rock's father was even half of what Julius was, he was damn lucky, i grew up without a father and my life would be so much better if i had someone like this as an example.īut yeah, maybe i'm too hard on Rochelle, but i really despise these stereotype of "angry women" that goes from adult to child in a flip, i lost all respect for her in that episode where Julius (who worked 2 jobs) was helping at home and she had the gall to complain, and when he replied "i do this stuff better than you", she spent a good chunk of time verbally abusing him, and for some reason he put up with it, and even teaches to do the same because as he says "women don't make sense, so just apologize even when they're wrong". Actually, from the few episodes i saw from it, she made Chris (and only Chris) do the house work, i don't know how often though, but even so, compared to Julius, the guy who worked 2 jobs, always was there for them when they needed and even gave some lessons for Chris (taking him to work so he could earn his pay was one of them).
